We at Diaper-eez try to ask all new parents-to-be if they have thought about the diapering question. To our surprise, most parents just assume they will use the disposable option. When we show them the washable cotton alternative, most are surprised to understand how simple, comfortable and affordable cotton diapering is.

Q1: How many diapers will I need?

24-36 per child.

Q2:  How many waterproof covers will I need?

- 4-8 covers per child in Newborn or Small size
- 4-5 covers in Medium size
- 3-4 covers in Large size

Q3: How often will I have to wash?

Twice per week if you have 3 dozen diapers.
A new baby will use between 8-12 diapers per day, so you will need to count on at least that many. Later on as a child sleeps longer etc., and food and/or formula gets added to their diet, frequency of diaper changes diminishes.

Q4: Do I need to pre-soak, scrape or boil my diapers?

NO!! to all questions, although as a parent you may wish to pre-soak soiled diapers, but if you are a nursing Mom, stains will wash out of diapers usually without pre-soaking. Adding a non-chlorine bleach alternative (Hydrox) to the wash will not only whiten but also disinfect the diapers.

Q5: What type of detergent should I use?

Whatever detergent you currently use on your clothes -- just a smaller amount.

Q6: Can we wash diapers with other things?

NO!! Diapers and Covers should be washed in a separate load.

Q7: Do I need to buy a Breast Pump before I have my baby?

Most new Moms appreciate a breast pump during the first week or two after the baby arrives to give you (the Mom) some relief. New babies generally fall asleep before they empty a breast so to give some relief, moms express milk either manually or with the help of a Breast Pump.

Once your baby has established a nursing routine (most on demand!) at about 3-4 weeks, it is the consensus of most of the Moms who frequent our store, to introduce one bottle per day of breast milk, preferrably at the same time everyday (9:00 p.m. feeding) so Dad, or Grandma, or Grandpa, or sister, or brother etc. has a chance to feed the baby while you (Mom) gets some rest. If you consistently give one bottle per day to your infant, going back to work will not be as stressful for either you or your baby as they will be comfortable taking the bottle.

If you are lucky enough to be able to stay home with your baby, you may choose not to introduce a bottle to your baby and therefore not need a Breast Pump.

Q8: Wet or Dry Diaper Pail?

This is the question!

I like to recomment a Dry Diaper Pail because I guess I am basically lazy. But I also know that whether you pre-soak or not, stains should come out of the diapers, and with a good sealed diaper pail odours should be contained.

Wet Pail: Fill pail 1/2 with water and add only 1 of the following:

Borax, Amaze, White Vinegar, or Envirodesc.

When the pail is full, take to washing machine and tip everything inside. Spin extra moisture out of diaper and start regular washing cycle.

After reading this chart, it is important to note that whether you choose to use cotton or disposable diapers, a diaper service or a recycling company, you are still required by law to "flush" the solid contents of the diaper away! So, given that information, how will you choose to diaper your baby?
